Informational meeting with representatives of intelligentsia

On February 17^th in the office of Fund "Sukhumi” was held informational meeting with participation of teachers of the secondary schools # 5 and 6 of Autonomous republic of Abkhazia and also school # 17 of Kutaisi as well as doctors. The topic of the conversation was consideration of the analysis of Georgian and Abkhaz experts "Dialogue process of security guarantees in the context of Georgian-Abkhaz conflict” and definition of positions of participants about security guarantees, importance of agreement on non-resumption of hostilities and mechanisms of its protection.

"It’s a pity that we’ve not discussed these issues before. Most of us have such feeling as if our opinions are not taken into account when they solve these issues”.

"Agreements on non-resumption of war is necessary for rebuilding of confidence between parties”, - say participants. Though at the same time they taken into account real fears for Georgia in case if there are not elaborated full-fledged guarantee mechanisms.

There were developed issues which were of principal importance for the participants:

- Signing of agreement should not be equivalent to the voluntary refusal of Georgian side from Abkhazia.

- The main issue in the agreement is the issue of IDPs.

- Until there is even one refugee in Georgia it is impossible to tell about successful negotiations though we think that both parties should go on reasonable compromises.

At the end of the meeting participants submitted their proposals.

Meeting with young women in Tskhaltubo

"I often participate in the meetings of Fund "Suhumi”. I have become more self confident and loot at life with other eyes. Any woman should know her rights. It will change much in our lives and would contribute to formation of full-fledged society, - this was opinion of participants of the meeting, held in Tskhaltubo.

Girls had active discussion on the issues as gender equality, social roles of women and men, Georgian mentality and stereotypes.

There were considered international documents on women’s rights protection – the UN Resolutions 1325 and 1820, Beijing platform.

Participants mentioned that young generation talks about distribution of the roles of men and women more boldly. They think that discrimination should not happen on the basis of gender and equality should be established in every family.

Meetings on reproductive health

Meetings on reproductive health have been continued. Three meetings with women and young women IDPs were carried out in Women’s Support centres (Kutaisi-02.02.10; Tskhaltubo-17.02.10; Khoni-15.02.10).

The topics discussed were: complications connected with pregnancy, importance of regular visits of women to doctors, information about free of charge mammography examination, measures for prevention of breast cancer.

In desire of some participants they were rendered individual gynecological consultations.

New number of the magazine

Readers will learn much on sixteen pages of the bulletin: opinions of women from Batumi about problem of violence, attitude of training participants in Khobi to the issue of equality, issues of reproductive health, why 12-years old boy goes away from home and also about the fact that even psychologists need psycho-rehabilitation sometimes.

Work with society, women around us, interview with psychologist, editorial post – these main rubrics are contained in the new, first number of the magazine "Women’s Voice” of 2010.

As before the magazine will be published once in two months. Georgian version will be spread in the printed form and Russian in electronic.

Telecast on the topic «Gender strategy before elections”

"…You are watching the telecast, initiated by Fund "Sukhumi”.

How far are political parties ready to give women leading positions in lists before the local self-government elections? Is it really a time when activeness of women should give results and on the whole, how far comfortable is for women environment in Georgian politics?

These issues were discussed in the telecast organized on the 18^th of February on the air of the TV company "Rioni”. Activists of Fund, members of the Club of Women-Voters, leaders of local non-governmental organizations touched upon the issue of women’s participation in local self-governmental elections.

Picture, drawn by the TV journalists of Fund "Sukhumi” showed once again the situation in political parties functioning in different regions of Western Georgia.

Assistants of Fund talked about results of the monitoring carried out in parties, strategy of Clubs. Participants expressed desire that Fund "Sukhumi” continue work on exchange meetings of Clubs of Women-Voters, women working in the local self-government.

Of course, the problem should be given publicity, but the following concrete steps need to be made: study of public opinion, analysis, work with electorate, political parties, women-candidates.

"What should we expect from elections: perhaps, not very radical changes, but if it goes on so, these changes would never be made. That’s why intensive work will not be interrupted”, - such were positions of the participants of the telecast.

"I am the one of those who will participate in the local self-governmental elections in conditions of healthy competition”, - this statement was made by one of the participants of the telecast. No one doubted her sincerity since resources in this direction really exist.
